303. Responsible Speech

It follows from the rule "Say and do nothing unnecessary and be usefully occupied at all times." that you should take responsibility for those things that you do say. Never promise that which you cannot deliver, never say anything that you don't mean. Always think of the consequences for the other person of what you are about to say. Never be flippant in your speech. Never speak without thinking. You must never, by your speech, plant in anyone's mind a thought that could be harmful to them or to those they care about. Refrain from useless chatter.

Words have effects. The meaning of a word is what it does. The effects of some words can last for centuries or millenia.

"Words change how people behave. Words are the most powerful drugs that we have." - Mark Twain.

A wrong lecture I once received from someone who didn't know what they were talking about changed my behaviour and limited my behaviour for nearly 26 years. I was told to separate my professional fuction (testing in the consulting room) from the selling function in the dispensing room. This meant that during the test I was not sewing the seeds for the sale of value added items and so making it easier for the patient to go for the cheapest items.

302. "Luck"

Luck always favours the mind that is prepared. And when I look at it, the harder I work, the luckier I get.

This means that before every event, every test, job interview, exam or encounter of any sort, you should prepare, do your homework, check, double check and check again everything connected with it.

Luck is defined as that which happens when opportunity meets preparation. Learn to recognise it whenever it happens.

301. Training in the Martial Arts

When you train in a martial art, you will be on average, 30% faster than an untrained combatant. No matter how much bigger, hairier, uglier or smellier than you your opponent is, all that he has is a pair of arms and a pair of legs that are no different from your own. There is a limited number of ways these can be used against you. When you contact them, remember that and stick to them and destroy them rapidly.

There are 3 aspects of training in the Martial Arts. You should strive to develop each aspect evenly. These are 1. Strength. 2. Skill (Technique). and 3. Speed. If you have any 2 of these aspects you will beat an opponent who has only the other one. e.g. speed + skill will always overcome strength on its own.

300. Total Committment

Develop and cultivate within yourself the habit of total committment. This means there will be no idling, loafing off, standing around, sneaking away or calling in sick. This is a decision, cut away all other possibilities, excuses and rationalisations. Begin to give 100% for 100% of the time. Let there be nothing else going on.

299. Know Thyself

Find out who you are, what you stand for, what your values are, what your strengths and weaknesses are. Do the exercise where you list your values and re-order them by which you put first. Do this prioritising exercise at least once a year. Once you know, just carry on being yourself. Never try to be someone else.

298. The Light of Others

Whenever someone succeeds, it is often because there is someone else to show the way. The light does not have to be in your family, it often comes from your teachers.

297. Education and Freedom.

Education is the door to freedom. Without it, your choices become very limited indeed.

296. On Vegetarianism and Imposing your Views

Vegitarianism like everything else is a choice. If there are moral reasons then there are. The problem is when those that take certain choices seek to impose their views on others. This is called fascism !

295. How to Deal With Criticism

When you are being criticised, learn to listen to it as if you are simply hearing an alternative way of looking at yourself (as indeed you are). Judge it honestly and see if there is any truth in it. If there is, accept what truth there may be and work to improve on that aspect of yourself with the attitude that it is simply another piece of stone that needs to be chipped away from your magnificent sculpture.

If you find that there is no truth in it, waste no more time on it; do not give ear to untruth; simply state that it is untrue and do not get involved in arguing about it. Sound "iti" in mind and allow your mind to move on gently to the next item on your agenda.

294. Support

Always have a number of support groups to help you out. Things are much easier when you are surrounded by like-minded people. Join Mastermind Groups, think tanks, chambers of commerce, referral networks, professional associations etc.

293. Multiple Streams of Income

Always keep multiple streams of income. If you have a job, start a part-time business. If you have a business, take a part-time job. Invest in the stock exchange. Keep rental properties both residential and commercial. Keep building your asset base and generating new streams of income. Develop passive income streams.

292. Look After Your Own Customers

Don't worry about the competition, look after your customers instead.

291. There are no Days Off !

When you have a career, even if you are an employee, you are working for yourself. When you work for yourself there are no days off. If business is slow, clean out your files, make phone calls, do things that will drive your business forwards. If you are out and about, and headed for an appointment, call on an old friend for directions, it often generates extra business. Produce new business every day. Talk to everyone who rings up, you never know where each contact may lead.

289. Why We Set Goals

The reason you set a goal is for what it will make of you once you have achieved it.

288. Keep the Aim Clearly in View

Always have a clear vision of where you are going. Start with the end in mind. This is one of Stephen Covey's Habits of Highly Effective People. Know in advance where you are going and what you are building will look like once it is complete.

287. Choose a Job You Love

"When you choose a job you love, you will never have to work a day in your life." -Confucius

It is very important to be passionate about your work. If you are not in a business you can be passionate about, then it will soon become just a bad job with a high economic risk. If you choose a job you love you will be content in your work. Remember, though that what you love to do can and does change over time.

286. On Finding Yourself in a Fight

If you find yourself in a fight, be happy. The only 3 possible outcomes are Win, Lose or Draw. Either you have enough training, speed and strength to win or you don't. So smile at your enemy. At the very least it will unnerve him and throw him off balance !

285. Mastery and the Rough Zone

Everyone applies their knowledge daily and so should you. We don't always have enough knowledge, practice or skill to be perfect. We will often encounter rough patches. Only by getting into these rough zones and getting out again do we learn and grow and thereby achieve mastery. Embrace, therefore, the rough patches. This is more than simply "taking the rough with the smooth". It is pro-actively and consciously taking on the challenges and learning, always learning from them.

In this regard, a good discipline is to commit to practicing at least one difficut thing each day.

When you find yourself in a rough situation you must do 3 things. First find out how you got there and learn how to never make that mistake again. Second, figure out how to get out of the situation and what you need to do. Then do it !

284. Choice of Life Path

In choosing your life path, learn to distinguish those things you do best from all the things you simply enjoy. Then select a course or courses that will give you the best opportunities to make the most of your abilities.

278. Kill Procrastination

Never put off your plans until tomorrow. "Tomorrow" never comes. Practice the habit of doing things immediately. Learn to recognise the euphemisms that people use when they don't want you to spot that they are procrastinating or trying to avoid doing what you ask. Words such as "deferred", "pending" or "withheld" imply that they are going to do it SOME day, just not right now. Euphemisms are a form of lying. Don't be fooled by this; take the action that is appropriate NOW.

277. Laws - The Law of Cause and Effect

The Law of Cause and Effect states that everything happens for a reason. For every effect there is a cause or a series of causes (chain-reaction).  In a chain reaction, the last effect becomes the cause of the next effect and so on until the end of the chain. Sometimes a cause will have secondary effects and form sub chains, spreading out in ripples to effect peple, things and events that are not connected directly to the original cause.

Things do not happen by chance. We live in a world governed by laws. The clearer your understanding of these and of the effects you want to achieve, the better your chances of reaching your goals.

The thoughts that you have create the effects in your life.

It is not the world outside you that creates or dictates your circumstances; it is the world of thought (within) that determines the conditions of your life.

Ultimately, no-one forces you to feel, think or act the way you do. It is entirely your own choice.

Once a month you should take time out to examine the following areas of your life :

* Family
* Health
* Work
* Money.

Investigate the cause-and-effect relationships between what you think say do and feel and the results you are achieving. Ask what changes you could make to your thinking to improve the quality of some part of your life and insert the answer into your plan for the following month.



Remember that this law can be expressed as a cycle diagram.

276. Work on Yourself First.

Whatever you do or achieve, your success comes from within. Work, therefore on yourself first. You have just achieved your second Martial Arts Blue Belt. You did well on the night of your grading but the real work was done in class and at training. This was the work on yourself, learning the technique, doing the pad-work, practicing for speed and fluidity, doing the press-ups and sit ups to give you the strength and flexibility to be competent. This is work on yourself.

274. Where we Learn Most.

Reading and study are very important but where we really learn the most is from those around us.

273. General Negotiations.

Work together to defeat a problem rather than the other side. Focus on the various interests involved, not the positions. Try to reconcile the interests with each other - look for win-win outcomes.

When people take a position, try to find out why. Detect the interest behind the position. What other interests underlie the position ?

If one party wants the window open (position) for fresh air (interest) while the other wants it closed (position) to avoid the draught (interest), then the reconciliation or solution that meets all the interests is to open the window in the other room.

You can have a lot of fun practicing this exercise.

Desires and concerns are interests. Interests motivate people. Positions are things that one decides upon. This is a vital distinction.

Behind opposed positions lie shared as well as conflicted interests. Find the shared ones. Very often, when you look to the interests, new positions arise that are compatible. Alternatives emerge. The obvious position is never the only one and rarely is it the wisest.

In the case of a landlord and tennant, the shared interests are :


1. Both want stability.
2. Both want a well maintained property.
3. Both want a good relationship.

272. Negotiating with Strangers and Enemies.

When negotiating with strangers or enemies, work at quickly turning them into friends. This makes negotiation easier. Get to know them. Find out their likes and dislikes. Ask to borrow a certain one of their books. (This will flatter them.) but make sure to read it before you return it (in case you are questioned on it later.) And make sure you do return it !

271. The "I" Statement and Negotiation.

When entering into negotiations, "I" statements are very difficult for the other side to challenge. If you make a statement about them that they disagree with or believe to be untrue, such as "You are a racist.", they will either ignore you or become angry. If, on the other hand, you say "I find that racist.", you are forcing them to engage with your position.

In negotiations, speak only for a purpose. Always know what you want to communicate or to find out before you speak. When you want to know something, always be clear in your mind what purpose the information will serve.

270. Adding Wisdom

Being wise and becoming wiser are more to do with reducing than with adding. Wherever possible, eliminate ornamentation and grow ever simpler. Hack away the unnecessary and allow the truth to be revealed without obstruction. Learn to shed the layers. Learn to let go of overly complicated ideas and models.

269. Strength and Gentleness

Strength, though used in a refined way, is necessary in combat. Learn also, to move back and forth like the bamboo in order to dissolve the strong winds. Neither gentleness nor strength (firmness) alone is enough. It is the two fitted together that form the Way.

268. Bluffing.

It is the function of bluff and bluffing to redress the balance between one's own inadequacies and the other man's superiority and as this cannot be done in actuality, but only by psychological means which are independent of tangible resources, it is a weapon peculiarly suited to a man who is on the run.

267. Training in the Martial Arts

The main principle of training is this :

If you do not consider a few minutes' training worthwhile and if you think the chance of being assaulted is small, then you are one of those people people who encourage thugs to attack. No-one will be able to help you should an emergency arise.

Strength, though used in a refined way, is necessary in combat. Learn also to move back and forth like the bamboo in order to dissolve the strong wind of the attack.

Neither gentleness nor firmness alone is enough. It is the two fitted together that form the Way.

266. Alertness

At all times be alert, even when "off duty". Be like a submarine in peacetime - a submarine is always at war.

When walking anywhere, do not daydream. Feel your feet on the ground and keep your listening large. Keep an eye out for those who might be following you or lying in wait for you. Listen for approaching footsteps and watch for shadows.

Keep to the outside of the footpath or the centre of a lane. This maximises the amount of ground the opponent has to cover in order to reach you, gaining you valuable reaction time.

The success of an assailant's attack depends on surprise. So if you are sufficiently alert to neutralise the surprise, your counter will be very successful.

If you detect an attack, you can make plenty of noise and concentrate on doing damage. Noise demoralises your opponent. In Martial Arts, this is known as the Ki or Qi shout.

When attacked, immediately apply your most powerful and effective weapon to the most vulnerable point that is exposed on the opposition's body. Be ruthless.

265. Pain as the Spur to a Counter-attack

When, in combat, your opponent breaks through your defense, and lands a blow, you will feel pain. Pain is your friend. It is essential to ignore the negative aspect of pain (the fact that it hurts like hell) and instead of giving up, use it as a spur to your counter-attack.

In the psychology of an assault, your attacker only thinks of causing you damage, and rarely, if ever thinks of what you may do. When you launch an effective counter-attack, you will cut down his ego by 50%. Follow up immediately and get busy to finish the fight...hard.

264. The Wonder of the Ordinary

Dan Millman once said "There are no ordinary moments." Always value the wonder of the ordinary - to see the world in a grain of sand. Work on letting go. Hack away the inessential to reveal the Truth. Proper cultivation runs to simplicity while half-way cultivation runs to ornamentation. Study the arts of Ikebana - Japanese flower arranging and Bonsai to help with this practice.

Do not strain yourself (distort yourself) by twisting to conform to someone else's pre-conceived pattern.

263. Conservation of Energy

Do not waste your energy gratuitously. Over-exertion and over-development of muscles and organs are detrimental to your health. Rather you should seek to conserve your energy; always be moderate without going to extremes.

Let your movements in exercise be harmonious. Begin with Meditation, then a round or two of Tai Chi. Fit your movements harmoniously to your "opponent."

Learn to cultivate the art of detachment. Learn to not interfere but to follow the natural curves of things.

Let the thoughts you have and the emotions you feel when in front of an opponent pass like the reflection of a bird on still water.

Let not your feelings be sticky or blocked.

Accept yourself and go with your nature, not against it.

262. Self-Sufficiency

Devote yourself to becoming self-reliant and self-sufficient. You must never rely on the external rating of others for your happiness. Remember that Happiness is the journey, not the destination.

Hold yourself in reserve. Be quiet and unassuming without the least desire to show off.

261. Pride

Pride is a false sense of worth that derives from something that is not organically part of your Self. It comes from Ahankara - the identification by the mind of your Self with some external thing in the Creation. It gives emphasis to the superiority of a person's status in the eyes of others. There is fear and insecurity in pride because when you aim for status and being highly esteemed and achieve it, you are automatically involved in fear of losing that status. Protection of status then appears to you to be your most important need and this creates anxiety. Pride is very different from self-respect. All respect, including self-respect, springs from knowledge and memory of the Self and your origins and home in the Self. The less you are grounded in the Self, the more imperative is the need for pride. One is proud when he identifies with the ego. The core of pride is Self-rejection.

260. Doing and Attention Seekers. Extremes of Greediness

The world is full of people who are determined to be somebody or to give trouble; they seek attention. Do not become one of them.

One who tries to stand on tip-toe cannot stand still.
One who stretches his legs too far cannot walk.
One who advertises himself too much is ignored.
One who is too insistent on his own view finds few to agree with him.
One who claims too much credit does not get even what he deserves.
One who is too proud is soon humiliated.

These are rightly condemned as extremes of greediness and self-destructive activity, therefore, one who acts naturally avoids such extremes.

259. Unity, Non-Interference

Do not interfere with your own actions (self-sabotage). Lose yourself by giving up all subjective notions of the separate individual and become one with your opponent. Inside your mind allow all oppositions to become mutually co-operative. Yield to the power of the Self. Avoid doing, acting, striving, straining, trying or busyness. Adopt a supple attitude and from rest, allow all actions to take place without interfering. Study well the two Chinese texts, I Ching and Tao Te Ching

258. The Non-Stopping Mind

In combat (life) allow your mind to concentrate by not allowing it to stop anywhere. If you block, follow up immediately with your counters; Do not allow the space to develop that would give your opponent the chance to strike you. Remain aware of the whole field of action. Where there are multiple attackers, as soon as you have disposed of one, move immediately on to the next one without permitting the mind (and therefore the body) to stop. This is only possible when the mind is not permitted to stop for anything. Then all opponents will be dealt with in succession.

The mind is present everywhere because it is attached nowhere to any particular object. Even when relating to this or that object, it does not cling to it. Allow your flow of thought to be like water filling a pond - it is ready to move off again. It can work powerfully because it is free. It is open to everything brcause it is empty, like a tidy desk.

This is what is meant by Serene Reflection, it is the vivid and clear awareness that comes out of the tranquility of no thought.

257. Non-Attachment

A quiet and calm mind is important; beyond that, it is essential that the mind seeks not to grasp anything, that it does not place a claim of any kind on anything. Let your mind be employed as a mirror, grasping nothing, refusing nothing, receiving everything and keeping nothing for itself.

256. Mind Over Matter

As the mind is in control of the body, everything that affects the mind has a stronger influence on the body than those things that affect only the body. Every conflicting centre, every extraneous disrupting, decentralising emotion jars the natural rhythm and reduces a man's efficiency. Mark well the emotions that destroy the inner rhythms of a man and avoid them at all costs. They are :

* Jealousy
* Hatred
* Lust
* Envy
* Pride
* Vanity
* Covetousness
* Anger
* Fear

They are also known as Deadly Sins.

Keep your mind agile and free and work to eliminate all these negative emotions from your character.

255. Yin and Yang and The Law of Harmony

The basic principle of Tai Chi is that nothing is so permanent as to never change. The two "opposing" forces of Yin and Yang are really mutually interdependent. Be in harmony with your opponent's strength and force. This is the Law of Harmony. Do nothing that is not natural or spontaneous. Do not strain in any way.

254. The Law of Non-Interference

The Law of Non-Interference with Nature teaches us not to resist your opponent but to defeat him by yielding to him and then using his own strength to defeat him. This is the principle on which Judo is based. When being attacked, do not resist but control the attack (by means of your decoys) and swing with it. This is what is meant by the expressions, "Don't push the river." and "Go with the flow."

256. Crying

Crying is the natural expression of grief. When you are very sad it is perfectly right to cry.

When you are out and about in the world, however, crying can be seen as a weakness. This is then used by others as an excuse to take advantage of you.

There are people in the world who themselves have very low self-esteem and if they see you crying, will seize on it to make fun of you and make you feel even worse. They do this to make themselves feel better (at your expense). It should not make them feel better. It should make them feel ashamed because it is mean, spiteful and small-minded. It is extremely petty. They feel better because they are mean, bitter and twisted people.

People like this are not worth bothering about for they are cowards and bullies. They are best left to their own devices.

Never let your true feelings be known to all and sundry. Do not give your heart to the dogs in the street to play with nor to the pigs to trample.

Observe what happens when other boys cry. See who goes to comfort them and who laughs and makes fun of them. That will tell you who to keep as friends and who to leave behind. Beware of the ones who make fun of the weak as they seek to control others (and you if you're not careful.) In short, never let yourself be seen crying in public.

255. Trust

In the final analysis, if it does not suit someone to be trusted, you will not be able to trust them. Trust is conditional. Trust is always temporary and it must be weighed freshly every time it is applied for. Circumstances change and just because someone was trustworthy in the past does not mean they can be trusted again. Trust is not automatic. Never allow your granting of it to be done mechanically. Make sure that your trusting is a conscious act. Trust works two ways. Once broken, trust can never be fully regained.

254. Have Your Dreams

Always have great dreams. One day, you will realise them so long as you set goals and make realistic plans. Once you have realised them, replace them with even greater dreams. Until you have realised the dream, be clear in your mind that it isa dream dnd do not take it for reality. Keep your feet on the ground and your eyes fixed on your goals.

Be clear about the distinctions between reality and imagination and between imaginings and imagination. Imagination is always glamorous. It is the movie. Reality is never quite so pretty. Imagination allows you to be creative if it is used properly. When being creative if the mind throws up some fantastic image, do not say "This cannot be done." Rather, you should ask "How can this be done ?"

The ability to distinguish between reality and imagination is the ability to remain sane. If you cannot tell the difference, you are well on the road to madness.

Imagination is what allows you to be a great writer, poet, playwright, artist, sculptor, movie-maker or actor. Reality is the discipline to work through the obstacles to the execution of your imagined ideas. It is the persistence that keeps you at your desk even when you can think of nothing to write. It is the determination to never settle for second-best.

237. Espionage

Foreknowledge enables you to strike and conquer and achieve the extra-ordinary. This kind of knowledge can only be obtained from men, spies. Engage shamelessly in espionage, but do not flaunt it, you do not want to be caught spying, if only because the information loses its value once the opposition knows that you have it.

Always have two or three sources of information (collateral sources) to corroborate your spies' reports before accepting that their information is correct. This applies to general information too.

Make use of local inhabitants, the officials of the enemy, turning the spies of the enemy (double agents), deception and those who return from the enemy camp.

Remember that all is fair in Love, War, Diplomacy, Politics and Business.

Even when there is no conflict, spend a little time each day trying to find out the secrets of the opposition. Build dossiers on them and study these well. Learn to use their successful techniques and to avoid their errors. Find their weaknesses and use them against them.

236.Speak of Success

Speak only of your successes, never of your failures.

235.Your Wealth Plans and the Plans of Others.

Do not foster the plans other people have for increasing their wealth, e.g. by buying their products unnecessarily. Instead focus on and carry out your own (secret) plans for the accumulation of wealth.

Study and learn the techniques of driving a wedge between your enemy's front and rear, left and right flanks; prevent co-operation between his divisions; disrupt his communications; hinder his rescue attempts; prevent his officers from rallying the men. Always try to seize something that your opponent holds dear - then he will be amenable to your will. When you've got them by the balls, their heart and mind must follow.

Prevent your enemy from marshalling his forces. Interrupt him at every turn. Break his rhythms and do not establish patterns of your own. Learn the use of off-timing and master its techniques.

233. Warfare (3}

When fire breaks out in your enemy's camp, respond at once with an attack from without. Hit them while they are distracted and in disorder.

232. Warfare (2)

Always be sure of your facts and of the enemy strength brfore joining battle. If fighting is sure to result in victory for you then you must fight. If it is sure to result in defeat then you must NOT. Do not fight for mere fame nor should you fear disgrace because you have retreated. Remember that your objectives are to protect what is yours and to expand your state.

231. Conspiracy and Disaffection

The sight of men whispering together in small knots or speaking in subdued tones (like they do at funerals) indicates disaffection.Conspiracy cannot be far behind.

230. Verbal Contracts

Peace proposals, offers, deals, telephone sales pitches etc., unaccompanied by sworn covenants or written contracts indicate a plot to do you down. A verbal contract or a man's word are not worth the paper they are written on. When undertaking to do work for someone, do not put a job in hand (order from your suppliers) unless you have secured a 50% deposit from them.

229. Signs of Strength

If your enemy is nearby and being quiet he is relying on the natural strength of his position. Do not attack him but draw him into a weaker position before finishing him off.

228.Faults to be Eliminated

Beware of the following faults and whenever you see them in yourself, work hard to eliminate them.
1. Recklessness which leads to Destruction.
2. Cowardice which leads to Capture.
3. A hasty Temper that can be provoked leading to Defeat and Slavery.
4. A delicacy of Honour which is sensitive to Shame.
5. Over-solicitude for others exposing you to worry and trouble.(Boundary issue).

Mark these well if you are to avoid destruction of your state (self).

227. Pick Your Battles

In life as in war, there are roads which must not be followed, armies and navies which must not be attacked, towns which must not be beseiged, positions which must not be contested or defended and some commands which must not be obeyed. Trust to your Reason to know which these are and cultivate your Reason.

226. Keep the Aim Clearly in View

Stay close to your goals and objectives. Remain at ease while your enemy struggles. Be well fed when they are starving. Do NOT attack an enemy that is more orderly than you.

Remain calm and disciplined at all times. Await the appearance of disorder in the ranks of the enemy before launching an attack.

220. Warfare

Always seek to put yourself in a position that is beyond the possibility of defeat and then wait for the opportunity to defeat your enemy. He will provide the opportunity. If nothing happens offer the enemy a decoy opening in your defences and when he moves to exploit it, close your trap rapidly and destroy him utterly and without mercy.

Always know your enemy and know yourself.

Practice, practice, practice and again, practice for it is possible to know how to defeat the enemy without being able to actually do it.

When meeting, either for social, business or battle purposes, always arrive first at the field. You will then be fresh for the fight and the other will have to hasten and be exhausted. Arriving first helps you to detect any traps and ambushes prepared by the enemy. Arriving early is the temporal equivalent of taking the high ground. Impose your will on him.

Appear where you are unexpected.

Only attack places that are undefended.

Only hold positions that cannot be attacked.

Do not apply locks or seiges to your enemy for a long time. Once you have applied a painful lock, be satisfied with the pain you have caused and move on to your next technique before the opposition realises what you are doing.

Direct all your forces, strongly united, against a small fraction split off from the enemy main force and destroy it. Use the hard against the soft, the strong against the weak.

Seek to discover your enemy's plans. Use every method at your disposal, your own spies, their traitors, communications intercepts, tapped telephones opened post etc.

Avoid what is strong and attack what is weak.

219. Rapport



















Most of us build rapport with others in a hit or miss fashion, finding ourselves being friends with a motley collection of people and often not being able to become friends with those we would like to be. By studying the techniques of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) you will begin to build rapport consciously. Learn to listen and to match and mirror the body language of others. A good place to start is by reading Manwatching by Desmond Morris. This book has been revised and re-issued as Peoplewatching.

218. Concessions

In negotiations, sales, arguments, conflicts etc., always build in to your opening position an amount or thing that you don't mind conceeding. Then cultivate the habit of being the first to give. This gives you the advantage. Decide in advance what you are willing to give and be generous but do not run at a loss. When in doubt, do something. If you allow doubts to immobilise you, there will be little if anything achieved. By taking action, you mobilise the forces of the Universe which are there for your benefit.

Keep working on your communication skills. Your wealth, power and happiness all increase in line with your ability to communicate. Learn to speak well in public and to groups and practice the art as often as you can. Learn also to present yourself well physically through grooming and attire. These are the Principles of Work. You should keep a copy of them near you at all times or better still memorise them and bring them to mind whenever you have a task to do.

209. Important Distinctions Regarding Knowledge

There is a process and an order to the collection and use of knowledge.
1. Data is collected.
2. Data is organised to become Information.
3. Information acted upon becomes Knowledge.

There is nothing noble about being superior to some other person. True nobility lies in your being a superior person to your own former self. This is the practice of CANI or Kaizen. You must run your own race against yourself. It does not matter what other people say about you. What is important is what you say to yourself. You can do whatever you want to do so long as it is correct according to your conscience and your heart. Therefore you have a duty to keep your conscience informed and sharp and your heart open.

Never be ashamed of what is right. Decide what is right after appropriate study and stick to it.

Never get into the petty habit of measuring your self-worth against other people's. All such comparisons are odious. Every second you spend thinking about someone else's dreams is time taken away from your own. Always plough your own furrow and keep your nose out of other people's business.

194. Design Your Curriculum

When it comes to learning, a meaningful curriculum should be consistent and coherent (use joined-up thinking when designing it). If, for example, you are going for a scientific career like medicine etc., whatever other subjects you take, make sure that you take all the scientific ones as well as mathematics. A conflicted curriculum leads tio fragmentation of your learning while a coherent one leads to uniity of education. You should always balance science with the humanities (at least 25%.)

The word "inevitable" is fearful to the ego but joyous to the Spirit. Do not invest yourself in fear. Teach only Love for that is what you are. You teach by what you do.

Good teachers never terrorise their students. To terroise is to attack and this results in the rejection of what the teacher has to offer. The effect is learning failure. When a teacher terrorises he has already stopped caring for his student and when this happens the student stops listening to him. The expression "What you are and do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you are saying." was created to describe this situation. The film If... is a very good illustration of this principle and it is one of my favourites.

191. The Law of Cause and Effect

The most fundamental law there is is the Law of Cause and Effect. Sir Isaac Newton described it in his Second Law of Motion when he said that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The Laws of Karma work the same way. Karma is sometimes instant as when you are training in the Martial Arts - Theow a punch and your training partner throws you ! More usually, though Karma takes longer to work out. It may be days,weeks, years or even whole lifetimes before the effects of your actions come back to you but they do come back.

The technical description of this law in action is that the action done here and now enters your kryamaan, your future sanskara. When you are born you come into the world with this sanskara which is made up of sanchit - everything you need for the lifetime and prarabda - the circumstances into which you ar born which are best suited for the working out of your sanskara. The sanchit interacts with the prarabda and produces each event that befalls you. This is all utterly mechanical and in the absence of your conscious decisions would just play out mechanically. You have the ability to choose your response to any and all situations. By acting to simply meet the need, you will eliminate your past sanskara and prevent the creation of future sanskara, thus freeing yourself from the cycle of birth and death.

187. The Right Thing to Do

A perfect example of this is the story of the King's Bargain - A king in India decided that he would pass a law that everyone selling goods in the market should have all their produce sold and if it didn't sell he would buy it all. Some criminals decided to gather up all the rubbish and claim that this was their produce. When the market closed they offered it to the king's officers who told them to go away but they insisted that the king had given his word. The officers told the story to the king who thought about it and said. "Yes I have given my word. Pay these men for their produce." This went on day after day and soon the palace filled up with the rubbish from the market. His wife couldn't stand it any more and she left him. One by one his staff left him until the king was left alone in the rubbish-filled palace. Finally Self said "I am leaving you too." To which the king said "No you cannot leave. I have given my word and I have kept to it even though I knew what would happen." Self then replied "You are right, I cannot leave for you have kept your word." Self stayed. One by one his staff returned and finally, his wife came back because they all admired the man who had been brave enough to keep his word.

186. Offshore

Consider moving your domicile (official country of residence) to the Channel Islands - Gurnsey or Sark for instance, as the Tax implications are favourable. Sark has a 0% Income Tax rate while Gurnsey is 20%. Do your own research to check out the feasability of such a move. There is a good ferry service and Gurnsey has an international airport. 185. The Formula for Compound Interest

When considering investments, consider the power of compounding. Compound interest is where the interest you have earned is added to the investment and it itself generates more interest : The formula is as follows :

A = P(1 + r/q)nq

The nq outside the brackets above does not mean "multiplied by nq" but "to the power of nq".

P is the principal (the money you start with, your first deposit)

r is the annual rate of interest as a decimal (5% means r = 0.05)

n is the number of years you leave it on deposit

A is how much money you've accumulated after n years, including interest.

If the interest is compounded once a year:

A = P(1 + r)n

If the interest is compounded q times a year:

A = P(1 + r/q)nq


As a good exercise you should work out dozens of examples comparing the returns when interest is compounded and when it is just simple interest (SI = PRT/100).

Formula for the present value (discounted value) of a future amount

P = the present value of amount A, due n years from now

r = the rate of interest

For example, someone contracts to pay you $100,000 in ten years. What's that worth right now, if they changed their mind and decided to paid you upfront? Say the interest rate is 5%.

At simple interest:

P = A/(1 + nr)

If A = 100,000 and n = 10 and r = 0.05 (which is to say, 5%), then

P = 100,000/(1 + 10x0.05) = 100,000/1.5 = 66,667

At interest compounded annually:

P = A/(1 + r)n

Using the same example as for simple interest, this gives

P = 100,000/(1 + .05)10 = 100,000/1.62889 = 61,391

At interest compounded q times a year:

P = A/(1 + r/q)nq

Or in the same example but compounding monthly (q = 12)

P = 100,000/(1 + 0.05/12)120 = 100,000/1.64701 = 60716

179. Fantasies

Fantasies are distorted forms of vision. They are always distorted because they involve the twisting of perception into unreality. Actions that stem from such distortions are the reactions of those who "know not what they do."

Such fantasies are unhealthy and lead to self-delusion.
It is important to distinguish between unhealthy fantasy and Imagination and Creativity; these, of course, lead to a better life.

176. Weapons Training

It is generally better order to train with your longest range weapons first in order to keep your enemy as far from you as possible. Once your long-range weapons have been mastered, move on to those that operate at closer range until you are training with dagger and empty hand. In Silat, of course we train mostly for close quarter combat.

175. The Great Time Management Myth

You cannot manage Time.
Time moves on inexorably.
You cannot add to it or subtract from it.
You cannot make tomorrow happen before today.
You cannot save Time up.
You can, however, manage what you do in Time. In one day there are 86,400 seconds. Treat each one as if it were a €1 coin.
Remembering that you cannot save it up, ask the questions "How will I invest my time, how will I spend it ?

This was certainly true in the times when Religion ruled everything, but don't rely on it today. People are not concerned so much these days with their honour as with their freedom. Law enforcement is getting tougher and generally people will obey the law when they are compelled to.

171. Keep Your Own Counsel

The only things people can know about you are those things that you choose to reveal. Only let people know those things about your business that are necessary for them to help you. Work on a "Need to Know Basis". There is a fashion for "sharing" everything with everyone. This is foolish and it drains your energy.

In any situation, make sure you know all the facts. Be like the sculptor and see the possibilities contained in the facts. The sculptor sees the potential while others see only the reality.

Strengthen and sharpen your mind by using meditation mnenomics, mind maps, IQ tests, puzzles, word games, crosswords, mental arithmetic etc. You should do this without let up because : "The Strong Take from the Weak and The Smart Take from the Strong".

168. Credit Cards

Beware of Credit Cards. If you owe €2,000 on your card and the interest rate is 19.5% and you only pay the minimum amount, it will take you 41 years to pay it off ! Credit cards are unsecured and the most expensive product a bank will sell you. More expensive still are store cards, their interest rate is 29%, minimum.

Only ever use a credit card as a payment mechanism rather than a method of borrowing. This means that you should use your card when out and about but make sure that you pay it off in full and on time within the month. This eliminates or minimises the interest charge and avoids the late payment fee.

Never pay Payment Protection Insurance on your card. THIS IS A SCAM. PPI raises the effective interest by 7% and it only pays out the minimum payment - NOT THE FULL BALANCE and then only covers you for 1 year. In addition, the charges are added each month to your credit card balance, increasing the principal.

Credit cards are a very dangerous weapon used by the system against you. They are designed to keep you poor. If you must have one be very careful how much you spend on it and do try to have a 0% one. Beware of these too, as the interest-free period expires after 6 or 9 months.

Even better than a credit card, have an American Express or Diners Club catd. These are charge cards and must be cleated in full every month.

A debit card (laser) is even better because it only allows you to access funds that you already have. With these, there is no element of borrowing unless you use it to run up your overdraft.

Generally speaking, credit cards are extremely dangerous brcause they are the fastest way into big, big debt. You should treat them as you would a loaded gun or a fully primed Mills bomb.


167. Stick to the Truth

Stick to the truth. The Human Mind is a truth-seeking mechanism. Do not distort Reality and you will not go wrong. You will have integrity and unity. Your mind will be sane, calm and healthy.

166. Setting Boundaries

When you set boundaries, you keep other people's problems out of your life.This is being responsible and happy rather than being responsible and miserable.Taking responsibility does not automatically lead to misery. By setting your boundaries you are taking responsibility for yourself and teaching others to do the same for themselves.

In the spiritual world, your boundaries are always real but often intangible. They can increase your love and save your life. Such boundaries define your soul and help you to guard and maintain it.

Know your boundaries. Define what is me and what is not me. Know what things you take responsibility for and what things you don't. This gives you freedom and opens up more options for you, more choices.

Learn your parameters (boundaries) and keep them clear in your mind. Do not become confused. Write them down. Remember that you are not responsible for other people. You do not control THEIR behaviour and it is a waste of energy to seek to do so.

"Cast not your pearls before swine." Boundaries keep your pearls inside and the pigs outside. Boundaries guard your heart and your treasures. Your boundaries should have "gates" in them in order to let in the good and let out the bad. You should consciously control the traffic through these gates.

Basic boundary maintenance requires that you clear about your Yes and your No. No is the most powerful tool in your boundary building chest.
No is confrontational.
No sets limits.
No prevents abuse.
No is powerful.
No is used in self-defense,

When asked, do not give reluctantly or under compulsion. Give generously with an open heart or do not give at all.

Your words let people know where you stand. If you do not like the way you are being treated, look at the words you are using. People will treat you the way you teach them to treat you.

165. Responsibility

Take responsibility. You must always take 100% responsibility for yourself, your actions, decisions, failures etc. You are not responsible for other (adult) people. In any relationship you are 50% responsible. You must live up to your half always. This is what it means to take ownership of your life.

"To do the duty of another is fraught with danger." -The Bhagavad Gita. When you take on the responsibility of the work of another you are on the road to burn-out. You are training the other to shirk his obligations and you are leaving yourself open to attack and lawsuits if something were to go wrong. Mind your own business !

Being responsible has two faces :
1. You are responsible FOR yourself.
2. You are responsible TO others.

Being responsible for yourself means dealing with your feelings, attitudes and behaviours so that they become ever more supportive of your needs and your obligations. Know where the limits are.

Being responsible to others means helping them to do what they cannot do for themselves and ensuring that you treat them with absolute fairness.

If you take on large burdens and try to do it all by yourself, as if this were a part of your normal load then you will be crushed by the burden. Then you will be of no use to yourself or to anyone else. (Irresponsible).

If you act as though your normal duties and responsibilities were someone else's duty, then you are being irresponsible in the other direction.

The penalty for being irresponsible is that you do not have any control of the consequences and you might very well not like how things turn out.

Being responsible does not mean that everything that goes wrong for you is your fault. Responsibility is defined as the ability to respond. You are responsible for how you respond i.e. what your next action will be and for how you interpret the experience but not necessarily the cause of the experience itself.

If you attribute the causes of bad things to yourself your energy drops and the effect on you is Negative. If you externalise it, your energy rises and the effect on you is Positive.

Warning : Others will often try to get you to attribute blame to yourself in an attempt to externalise their responsibilities. This is called laying a guilt trip on you.

Rejections etc., are specific occurances and you shouldn't interpret them as having any long lasting or global significance. The past does not equal the future and if you have done your best (be honest here), then they are not your fault.

The ability to respond means the ability to speak and act effectively and intelligently and not simply react in a knee-jerk fashion.

164. Being Nice & Being Polite.

Being nice out of fear doesn't work, ever. Be nice and be polite because that's who you are and only for that reason. A common thing to happen is that people of a lower order of development often mistake your good manners for weakness and then try to take advantage of you. The first line of your defense is to be aware of this phenomenon and be alert for the signs that you are about to be taken advantage of. The second line is to be polite but firm. The third is to state your position bluntly, without grace or favour and be willing to fight for your rights. Very often you will need to let people know that you are not to be trifled with by using such expressions as "Do you think I should have my solicitor present ?" or "I am not sure who's right here perhaps we should call the police don't you think ?" Always refer these matters to the next level up.

Trying harder doesn't always work. Sometimes you just have to try smarter.

While it is important to survive, don't settle for mere survival. Work on designing your life, not simply making a living. Basic study of the Martial Arts will enable you to survive but dedicated study will make you a warrior.

It is useless having a mind like a machine-gun without having ammunition to put in it - Winston Churchill.

It is vitally important that you feed your mind with fine material (ammunition). This is keeping the mind in Good Company. Good company for the mind is that which elevates your mind to higher ideals than the mere mundane. It includes such diverse sources of inspiration as the music of Mozart, the writings of Marsilio Ficino, Shakespeare, Schiller, Goethe, Descartes, Voltaire and other philosophers like Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, Marcus Aurelius etc. as well as the paintings of Leonardo Da Vinci. Good Company means being in the presence of those who meditate and who are otherwise saintly. It means reading scripture an vedas. It alsomeans working with like-minded people on projects for the greater good of mankind.

159. Practicality

If you have thought out a plan of action, the next step is to write it down. Making written notes of your plans, poems ideas etc., is creating a physical bridge between your mental world (the intangible) and the physical world (the tangible). This is the first stage in realisation (the making real) of your plans and goals.

The advantages in this are :

1. It makes your ideas visible.

2. It provides a written record.

3. It can protect your copyright (intellectual property).

4. It gives a standard against which you can measure your progress.

5. It helps you to remember what you have created.

158. Go the Extra Mile

Another suggestion for living better is to give more than you are paid for. Make this a principle by which you live your life. This will make you so valuable in your work that you become indispensible. Always go the extra mile.

Everything in life has a price and in modern society the way you pay for it is with the money you earn. Therefore, at every opportunity, improve your career. Take exttra courses. Improve all of your skills. Acquire new skills. Learn new languages. Do this even when the subjects bore you. You may only ever need to use the skill once in your lifetime but by having it you will be more confident and more useful. This will open the door to higher earnings.

Put out more on your job than you are being paid for. Miracles will begin to happen. If it makes you unpopular with your co-workers, that is their problem. Only you can live your life and there will be people depending on you.

Do this today and tomorrow and for ever.

This principle has an application with homework and examinations. When you are given an extra question which is optional, always do the extra question. You may have got one of the earlier questions wrong. In cases like that the examiner will always give you the benefit of the best questions you have done.

157. Count Your Blessings

Every day, spend time taking stock of your blessings. Appreciate the assets you already possess. When you try, you will find it impossible to put a monetary value on what it is worth for example to live in a wealthy peaceful and stable country.

What would your job be worth if you were unemployed ?
What is it worth to you not to be in jail or heavy debt ?
What are your loved ones worth ?
How much would you take for your sight, your arms, your legs ?

With so much going for you, can you see how absurd it is to be depressed or sad ?

Your better way of life begins now.

Count your blessings. Once you realise how valuable you are, and how much you have going for you, the smiles will return. Move forward towards the life that God (or the Supreme Being, if you prefer) intended for you with grace, strength and confidence.

If the news arrived that you were missing at sea, every lifeboat, ship and aircraft available would be sent to search for you. Millions would be paid out in overtime. Thousands of litres of diesel and aviation fuel would be burned and millions of watts of electricity expended just to bring about your rescue. Think of that the next time you feel low, useless or insignificant.

The expression, "Building castles in the air" means that you create in your mind some wonderful project but the chances of fulfilling it are remote. We all build castles in the air. It is the proper function of your imagination to do this. Some people dismiss such imagination as impractical and so the expression has come to have a slightly pejorative connotation. Here is the truth of the matter : When you build castles in the air, don't let your work be lost, for that is where they should be. Instead, get busy and work hard to put the foundations under them.

We can all be adversely affected by the circumstances in which we find ourselves. It is well to recognise this in other people and refrain from asking them for favours etc. whilst they are below par.

If everything is not perfect, everything is tolerable. - Voltaire, The World As It Is.

What Voltaire is saying is that while we must endure some imperfections, we should tolerate them and strive for perfection. Let us not be upset because things are not quite as we would like them to be.
